Health and Beauty Advice, Favoring Holistic and Natural Methods
I am not a doctor. Nor have I ever played one on TV (when I was pursuing my very short acting career).
But, I am a writer with a passion for natural health and beauty — not a fan of allopathic medicine for general healthcare, because taking care of myself without outside help is a good thing.
The Dermatologist Who Went There
Shortly after moving to Los Angeles, I got cystic acne. That’s probably TMI (Too Much Information). Think regular acne is bad? Just Google “cystic acne,” and it will be evident that it kinda sucks.
I went to several dermatologists; have taken: Accutane twice (effective, until I was off it), birth control to regulate the hormones, Retin-A, and other prescription topical treatments; and even sought treatment from aestheticians, yet the cystic acne kept returning. All the treatments were temporarily effective.
The last dermatologist I saw, back in 2007, prescribed antibiotics for me to take indefinitely and gave me an armload of samples and manufacturer coupons for the prescription drugs.
Everything was marked with his doctor code/info. Which probably meant that the dermatologist would get credit/gain favor in the eyes of pharmaceutical companies, after I redeemed the coupons and other junk. Generous incentives from drug companies to healthcare providers are alive and well.
So, this “doctor” — who didn’t really seem to care about my condition (much less listen to my needs) — wants me to take antibiotics forever and visit him on a regular basis, so he can get paid$$$.
Yeah? No. That’s not patient care, that is a pimp trying to hustle and take care of business.
Long-term use of antibiotics would weaken my immune system and make me unhealthier. That’s when I said no to drug$ and no to money-grubbing sorts who prescribe modern superficial snake-oil remedies to hide the source of the problem.
Self-Empowerment: My Own Turning Point in Health & Beauty
I did a lot of research, mostly through the internet, and devised my own holistic/natural strategy for clearing my skin, without drugs. Basically, I detoxed my system, took liver-supporting herbs, and concocted my own simple skin care routine. It took three months to clear my skin completely, using the natural supplements and herbs – which I don’t take anymore.
My skin has been clear ever since that 3-month treatment. Basically, my zit history status report breaks down to this: 10 years of cystic acne, the past 3 years (and counting) of clear skin.
OK, enough about my former acne problem. Handling such a stressful ordeal successfully without drugs or even a doctor has turned me on to natural and holistic methods of health care and beauty, because it works! This is why I am passionate about holistic and natural health & beauty!
